This week at Color Throwdown is personal. When I saw the colors for this week's challenge: AQUA, BLUE, GREEN and KRAFT, I immediately thought sea turtles.
Sea turtle nesting season in Florida is from March 1st through October 31st. During that time, you can watch sea turtles nest and hatch on the shores of Vero Beach and Sebastian. Female sea turtles return to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs. Quiet, dark beaches allow them to lay their nests uninterrupted. They also give baby sea turtles the best chance of returning to the ocean soon after hatching. Vero Beach is a quiet beach town with low beach traffic and an emphasis on conservation which allows sea turtle nesting to thrive. On average, sea turtles will nest two to three times per season and will drop about 100 eggs each time. Once the eggs are securely in their new nest, the sea turtle will cover her eggs by throwing sand over them with her flippers. Last year saw over 1,000 sea turtle nests! Conservationists will mark each nest to protect it from beach-goers. Houses and businesses/restaurants along the beach dim their lights all season so as not to disturb the nesting. If you are ever in Vero, I encourage to take a late night Turtle Walk with park rangers or conservationists to see this amazing experience.
The card base is distressed in Mermaid Lagoon and Peacock Feathers. A kraft panel was distressed along the edge, and stamped with Honey Bee's Sandy Shores. A WELCOME was die cut from the panel (all pieces are inlaid) and the sentiment is from Simon Says Stamps Tiny Words. The sea turtle border, from Memory Box, was die cut, adhered, and filled with green Stickles.
Enjoy.
